Cathedra SMART Global Ecosystem
Last February 27th, as a continuation of the activities part of the SMART Global Ecosystem Cathedra (between SNGULAR and the University of Valladolid - UVa), we organized a Think Tank on GEOdata & AI around the forestry and the use of the land sectors.
The cathedra emerges in 2021 as a continuation of the collaboration that we have been maintaining for years with the University Institute for Research in Sustainable Forest Management UVa-INIA, that lead to launched projects such as SIMANFOR, the first forest management simulator in the cloud that allows the simulation of forests all around the world.
Today, this collaboration has become a benchmark in the application of technology for environmental management. In a diverse collection of events (hackathons, contests, conferences, proofs of concept, etc.), it has brought together a number of professionals to promote sustainability in companies and the crucial role of technology in mitigating climate change.
The Think Tank that took place, in an online format, brought together +30 professionals from companies such as El Grupo Sylvestris, ZENIT Ingeniería, Dendron Consultoría Forestal, Agresta, GEOSAT, BALAM Agriculture, and Cesefor, among others. We divided into working groups to debate and ideate around the following topics:
-
The impact of GEOdata and AI at a sector level. How do these technologies impact sectors such as transportation, agriculture, energy,…?
-
Exploring New Frontiers: opportunities and applications of technologies with greater application and novelty such as geopositioning and remote sensing.
-
Challenges addressed: problems faced by sectors and society that can be addressed from a GEOdata + AI application approach.
-
Challenges in Sustainability. For example, the energy impact of generative artificial intelligence.
During the hour and a half duration of the event, it was very enriching to be able to share experiences and ideas from the sector’s first-hand - and we left, of course, with the feeling that there is a lot to do, and that we have the tools to do it. .
