David Álvarez, new ESG Manager
October 10, 2024
We’ve smoothly entered a continuum where ESG is not just an acronym, but a central part of our actions and mindset. The tempo we’ve set is steady, largely thanks to the individuals leading this area with expertise and enthusiasm.
Elia Vallejo is passing the baton to David Álvarez, our new ESG Manager. Elia’s outstanding work has focused on updating SNGULAR's Environmental, Social, and Governance policies, showing both clients and investors that we are a company aware of and committed to the future. For example, this summer we certified our environmental management system with the ISO 14001 standard, and earlier this year, we launched the “Game of Diversity” course aimed at our managers, which yielded excellent results.
But this isn’t the work of just one person—it’s a team effort involving areas like Finance, Communications, People, and Legal. And of course, it also requires the commitment of every SNGULAR team member. David will now take charge of implementing and overseeing all policies, strategies, and practices related to ESG, while continuing to serve as chapter leader for Design.
“We’ve made significant progress, but of course, there's always room for improvement.” With this drive to keep advancing, David steps in, sharing the next steps that will guide our journey. For the first time, we’ll be assessing and reporting on double materiality: both the environmental and social impacts of our activities as a company, as well as how issues like climate change could affect the company itself. The upcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is just one of the many challenges ahead in the coming months.
The Environmental Impact of Technology
It’s a common misconception that tech companies are immune to environmental impact because we operate in the digital space and are therefore “cleaner” compared to industries with more direct effects. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our activities have a significant impact, one we must understand and mitigate.
For example, when developing code, sustainability and social responsibility come into play. Well-written code can minimize energy consumption, and we deploy it on cloud services that certify the use of renewable energy and monitor water consumption in their data centers.
At SNGULAR, we have the expertise to build technology with a low environmental impact. One example is this very website, where we apply best practices in development and content management to reduce its environmental footprint.
On the other hand, we are working on a methodology aimed at developing, monitoring, evaluating, and auditing algorithms whose decisions directly or indirectly impact people. This includes preventing potential discrimination against specific population sectors, detecting algorithmic bias, complying with European regulations, and ensuring fairness in facial recognition algorithms. We focus particularly on high-risk sectors such as employment, healthcare, education, security, justice, and social services.
David Álvarez is committed to carrying out his role “with total honesty and transparency, relying on official and independent bodies to certify that what we say we do is 100% real.”
